can I get an internet phone if I have satellite internet?

I am moving to an are with no cable or phone land lines, I plan on getting satellite cable and internet but satellite phones are expensive and unreliable. I am looking into getting an internet phone with my satellite internet, will this work and can anyone recommend an internet phone site?

One of the drawbacks of satellite internet is high latency (slow ping times). There will be at least a 1/4 second lag just due to speed of light limitations and a satellite that’s 24,000 miles up.

This makes interactive graphic gaming practically impossible, and also means that you’ll be wanting to say “over” after every phrase so that your conversations don’t collide.

On the other hand, it beats the heck out of no communication at all.

Other factors to consider include Internet connectivity (a common option offered by satellite phone companies) and the price per call. Some calls can cost fifteen cents to two dollars when placed from marine satellite phones or cost even more when made to a satellite phone from a mobile phone or landline phone. The good news is that the person you call from a sat phone usually doesn’t have to pay anything. So this is clearly a case of don’t call the “boss”, he’ll call you! Bear in mind that all satellite companies are trying to remain competitive and so may offer special deals on unlimited calling or even a prepaid plan.

There are many advantages that could come from using marine satellite phones. You could make important phone calls at any time, receive phone calls at anytime or even conference while out on the ocean. Another advantage of Marine sat phones is that unlike cellular phones or terrestrial cell antennas, they are not especially prone to natural disasters. Natural disasters usually take out cell towers and terrestrial lines. With marine satellite phones, since the connection happens from space and your ship, you are always protected and connected.

If you frequently travel or must be available at all times even when you’re out at sea, then buying marine satellite phones is a shrewd move.

Reaching a beach in Trinidad, she became the first woman on record to swim across the Atlantic Ocean — a dream she’d had since the early 1960s, when a stormy trans-Atlantic flight got her thinking she could don a life vest and swim the rest of the way if needed.

The 56-year-old left the Cape Verde Islands off Africa’s western coast on Jan. 12, battling waves of up to 30 feet and strong winds.

David Higdon, a friend of Figge who kept in touch with her via satellite phone, said she had originally planned to swim the Bahamas, but inclement weather forced her to veer 1,000 miles off course to Trinidad, where she arrived on Feb. 5.
